Books You Need to Read: Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas | The Fiery One Blog

Have you ever started reading a book only to find you’ve finished it and you haven’t moved for 9 hours? That happened to me with Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas. I first heard about this book on Pinterest as I was looking at digital art as inspiration for my own book. Among the suggested boards was one simply titled “Throne of Glass”. A quick scroll through later, I knew I had to read the book that board was inspired by! Throne of Glass is a thrilling tale that I never knew I needed in my life.

Goodreads has the following summary on the TOG page:

After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin.

Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king’s council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she’ll serve the kingdom for four years and then be granted her freedom. Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilarating. But she’s bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her … but it’s the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.

Then one of the other contestants turns up dead … quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.

Doesn’t it sound amazing?! Oh man let me tell you, I bought this book and I finished it that same day (at 4 am.) The next day, I went back and bought the second one, Crown of Midnight. I finished that one in a single day too! I ended up purchasing the next two online, and once they arrived those were also gone in one day apiece. And that’s when I learned there was going to be another! In 9 months. UGH.

My fellow readers, you know the pain of waiting for the next book in a series. I promise you, Empire of Storms was worth it.

Now you may be asking, what makes this series so amazing?

Celaena. Sardothien.

UGH.

This book has some of the best features of good books:

  • It sucks you in immediately.
  • Character Development.
  • Realistic relationships
  • Strong female characters – PLURAL!
  • Emotions are not treated lightly or frivolously but have depth and realism.
  • and a lot more.

There is no one thing that makes this story amazing. An assassin, a prince, a deadly competition, even boring court life is anything but! I highly recommend this book, especially if you are like me and enjoy a great story with wit and a sassy female lead. And oh man, is Celaena sassy! So please, go get yourself a copy of Throne of Glass. You won’t regret it. I cannot possibly say enough about the amazing writing in this series.
